Country

Umubano primary school

Objectives:
The project aims to expand the capacity and infrastructure of the Umubano Primary School, in Kigali, to make it into a self-sustaining model teaching school. To contribute to this, three additional classrooms and a multi-purpose hall will be built, providing space for extra-curricular activities (art, physical education, drama), in-service teacher training sessions, adult education programmes for the local community (literacy, numeracy, financial management) and space for hire. The school fully funds 10% of students from poor homes and partially funds a further 40% through reduced school fees. It aims to become financially independent within five years, thanks to the income from paying students and the adult classes and hired space. Opened in 2013, it is considered an exemplary school by the Rwandan education authorities, which supports its development as a model in the country.

The NGO:
The British charity, A Partner in Education (APIE) was founded in 2009. It aims to facilitate delivery of sustainable, locally-led teacher training programmes, to accelerate progress towards fully inclusive, quality education in Rwanda.
